Each week, the streaming service releases a list of its 10 most-watched movies over a recent seven-day period to keep subscribers in the loop regarding its most popular titles.
Seven new films made their way into the top 10 this week, including The Little Things, the No. 1 movie of the week. Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver comes in at No. 2, while M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass and Split debuted at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. 10. The Wages of Fear (2024)
There is a new version of The Wages of Fear, a remake of one of the best French thrillers of all time from 1953. In the 2024 version, directed and co-written by Julien Leclercq, The Wages of Fear stars Alban Lenoir, Franck Gastambide, Ana Girardot, and Sofiane Zermani. In the desert, an oil well goes up in flames, threatening the population of a nearby refugee camp.
The company that owns the well decides that the only way to prevent the explosion is to detonate the well with nitroglycerin within 24 hours. A small team must transport the nitroglycerin to the well. If they succeed, it will result in a huge payday. However, the trip will be difficult, as the rough terrain is swarmed with hostiles and rebels. It’s a race against time in this edge-of-your-seat thriller.
9. Mortal Engines (2018)
From Academy Award-winning producer Peter Jackson comes Mortal Engines, a post-apocalyptic adventure based on Philip Reeve’s 2001 novel. Mortal Engines depicts a world thousands of years into the future where humans live in “Traction Cities,” communities that roam Earth on wheels. Larger Traction Cities hunt and suck up smaller towns for survival.
Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), a masked fugitive, embarks on a quest to kill Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving), the Deputy Lord Mayor of London. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) saves Thaddeus from the attack, but the Lord Mayor kicks him out of the city. Now at the bottom of the social ladder, Robert reluctantly teams with Hester and a group of alternate civilizations to fight back and stop Thaddeus’ plan to devour every city.
8. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Thanks to NBCUniversal’s deal with Netflix, one of the biggest titles of 2023 – The Super Mario Bros. Movie – is available to stream. Based on the hit characters from the Nintendo games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), two Italian-American brothers working as plumbers in Brooklyn, New York.
While fixing a water main leak, the two brothers are sent down the Warp Pipe into two kingdoms. Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), while Luigi appears in the Dark Lands ruled by Bowser (Jack Black). Featuring other notable characters like Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Mario sets out to find Luigi and save the world from Bowser’s reign.
7. The Accountant (2016)
No one computes numbers better than Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a gifted accountant who happens to be on the autism spectrum. Wolff is also a highly skilled marksman and elite hand-to-hand combat specialist. Wolff uses a small accounting office in Illinois to serve as a coverup for his intricate money laundering empire, where he helps criminal organizations with their financials. However, Wolff takes on a legitimate job: to audit Living Robotics after a financial inconsistency reveals an embezzlement scheme.
Meanwhile, Treasury Director Ray King (J.K. Simmons) enlists the help of Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to find “The Accountant,” Wolff’s codename. After Wolff makes a startling discovery, he becomes a marked man, forcing him to fight for survival.
6. Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Michael Jordan passes the torch to LeBron James in Space Jam: A New Legacy. LeBron, playing a fictionalized version of himself, is a superstar basketball player who wants his sons Darius (Ceyair J. Wright) and Dom (Cedric Joe) to play the sport, too. While Darius likes the sport, Dom objects, wishing to be a video game developer. LeBron and Dom travel to Warner Bros. Studios and meet Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), an all-powerful AI system.
However, AI-G kidnaps LeBron and Dom, trapping them in the Warner Bros. Serververse. LeBron will only be freed if he wins a basketball game against AI-G’s team, the Goon Squad. In need of teammates, LeBron heads to Tune World to recruit Bugs Bunny and his band of Looney Tunes to play in the most important game of their lives.
5. Skyscraper (2018)
Dwayne Johnson channels John McClane for his version of Die Hard in Skyscraper. Will Sawyer (Johnson) is a former Marine and FBI Hostage Rescue Team member who lost his left leg in a hostage situation gone wrong. 10 years later, Sawyer is a private security consultant summoned to the Pearl, the world’s tallest building located in Hong Kong. While Sawyer leaves to examine an offsite facility, mercenaries set the Pearl on fire and hold the Pearl’s owner hostage for ransom.
To make matters worse, Sawyer’s family is trapped on the 96th floor. After being framed for the attacks, Sawyer must evade the police and run back into the burning building to save his family. In most situations, the safest way out is down. In the burning Pearl, the only way out is up.
4. Split (2017)
Add Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) to M. Night Shyamalan’s list of iconic characters. In Split, Kevin’s dissociative identity disorder causes him to have 23 distinct personalities. One of Kevin’s personalities is Dennis, who kidnaps three teenage girls — Claire (Haley Lu Richardson), Marcia (Jessica Sula), and Casey (Furiosa‘s Anya Taylor Joy) — and imprisons them in cells beneath the Philadelphia Zoo.
The girls meet Kevin’s other personalities, including Patricia, a kind woman; Barry, the so-called leader; and Hedwig, a nine-year-old boy. Each of Kevin’s personalities warns the girls about personality No. 24, “the Beast,” a sinister creature with superhuman strength and lion-like rage. It’s a race against time for the girls, as they must figure out a way to escape or risk facing the Beast.
3. Glass (2019)
M. Night Shyamalan combined the casts of Unbreakable and Split for the final film of the trilogy, Glass. After the events of Split, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and his son (Spencer Treat Clark) work to stop Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) from feeding innocent victims to the Beast. However, David and Kevin are captured by Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) and taken to Raven Hill Memorial.
Also being held captive at Raven Hill is Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), David’s adversary from Unbreakable. Dr. Staple is out to prove that David, Kevin, and Elijah are mortals, not superhumans. With three gifted individuals under one roof, confrontation is inevitable. Is the world ready to know the truth about superhumans?
2. Baby Driver (2017)
Baby (Ansel Elgort) loves two things: music and cars. To combat his tinnitus, Baby listens to carefully curated playlists, especially when he drives. To repay a debt, Baby becomes a getaway driver for Doc (Kevin Spacey), a criminal mastermind who plans elaborate heists. After paying off his debt to Doc, Baby hopes to start a new life with his girlfriend, Debora (The Iron Claw‘s Lily James).
However, Doc violently threatens Baby, forcing the talented driver to work another heist. With a new crew of violent thugs, the heist goes haywire, forcing Baby to call an audible. With his and Debora’s lives at stake, Baby turns up the music and drives, hoping to evade capture long enough to escape his criminal life.
1. The Little Things (2021)
Oscar winners Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto star in The Little Things, a neo-noir crime thriller in the same vein as Seven and True Detective. Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon travels from Bakersfield to Los Angeles for an evidence-gathering assignment.
While in L.A., Deke accompanies Detective Jimmy Baxter (Malek) to investigate a murder. The investigation is eerily similar to an unsolved case from Deke’s past that still haunts him in the present. Regardless of his history, Deke agrees to help Baxter as they race to capture the killer before the FBI takes over the investigation. However, a potential suspect (Leto) pushes both men to their limits.
